Celebrate the Holidays in Chicago

Charles IferganEvents

The Holiday Season is upon us, and Chicago is ready to celebrate! We have gathered a list of things going on all around the city to help get you into the spirit of the season. Read on and discover all the ways you can get out and enjoy yourself this December.

If you’re looking for a holiday market, we’ve got plenty of those for your shopping pleasure! The Renegade Craft Fair is December 1st-2nd at Bridgeport Art Center, and Julmarknad – a Christmas bazaar featuring Scandinavian food and gifts- runs those same days at the Swedish American Museum. Christkindlmarket is an open-air European style holiday market on Daley Plaza and runs from the 1st to the 24th, and the Chicago Artisan Market at Morgan Manufacturing is on December 2nd. The One of a Kind Holiday Show will feature handmade gifts by over 600 artists at The Mart from December 6th-9th, and Randolph Street’s Holiday Market on December 15th and 16th will feature both vintage and modern wares.

If entertainment is something you’re looking for this month, Chicago will not disappoint. The Q Brothers Christmas Carol mixes reggae, dancehall, dubstep, and epic rock ballads at The Yard at Chicago Shakespeare, Navy Pier on December 1st. Joffrey Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker runs December 1st-30th at Auditorium Theatre, and the Chopin Theater features a ballet-free Nutcracker all month long as well. Start a new tradition with the kids and take a one-hour train ride through downtown Chicago as you drink cocoa on the Polar Express, which travels round trip from Union Station at Jackson Boulevard from December 1st-January 1st, or come see trees decorated to represent many cultures during Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light at the Museum of Science & Industry from December 1st-January 6th.

If holiday parties are more your style, we’ve got plenty of those as well! The entire family can enjoy parties, plays, craft making, and visits with Santa at Holiday Season Events by Chicago Park District December 1st-28th, or come see how Festival Hall at Navy Pier becomes an indoor Winter WonderFest with music, skating, carnival rides, and entertainment December 1st-January 6th. Adults are invited to come as a gangster or flapper to The Last Speakeasy, a Prohibition-era party with music, dancing, a casino, cocktails, and heavy hors d’oeuvres at the Chicago History Museum on December 6th, or join 1,500 people at the Matzo Bash for two hours of hosted cocktails and appetizers, plus DJ dance music on two floors at Sound-Bar on December 24th. Enjoy an early New Year’s Eve Party on December 30th with an open bar, hors d’oeuvres buffet, a band, dancing, and a silent auction at the black-tie-optional charity benefit EVE of the EVE at The Merchandise Mart. On New Year’s Eve, wear black tie to casino themed New Year’s Eve Monte Carlo on top of the Wit, or welcome the new year with 15 minutes of New Year’s Eve Fireworks at Navy Pier on Lake Michigan.
