Gorgeous summer weather is great for picnics, backyard barbecues, and all manner of fun in the sun, but the heat, humidity, and swimming, and sun damage can really take a toll on your hair. Midway through summer hair that started off looking healthy and shiny can look frizzy and parched. The good news is that with a few hair care tips from the pros you can put an end to the bad hair days of summer and have soft manageable tresses again.

Trim It

In addition to freshening up your hairstyle, a trim will eliminate split and damaged ends to get your strands off to a healthy start. Another trim mid-summer will maintain your hair’s healthy appearance right on through to fall.

UV Protection

Just as UV rays from the sun can damage your skin, the same is true for your hair. For extended time outdoors a wide-brimmed hat is your hair’s best friend. For shorter excursions or activities where a hat isn’t possible, apply a hair care product with UV filters to shield your strands from damaging UV rays and prevent color from fading.

Swimming Strategies

Before heading to the beach or pool, wash or rinse your hair with cool water and give your hair a generous coating of leave-in conditioner. Hair is absorbent, but it can only absorb so much. If it’s already saturated with fresh water and conditioner, that leaves less room to absorb saltwater or harmful pool chemicals. You should also rinse your hair with cool clean water after swimming to get rid of chemicals on the surface.

Outsmart Frizz

Your very best defense against frizz is keeping your hair healthy. Additional steps you can take are switching to a moisturizing and smoothing shampoo and conditioner, using anti-humidity styling products, and applying a bit of anti-frizz serum. To outsmart frizz permanently talk to your stylist about salon services such as a Brazilian Blowout or Japanese Hair Straightening for super sleek frizz-free strands.

Avoid Heat Styling

The heat from blow dryers, flat irons, and curling irons damage hair over time. Couple this with the added stresses of summer weather and activities and the results can be less than attractive. At least a few times a week opt for a no-heat hairstyle, such as braiding damp hair before bed for a beachy wave in the morning.
