Constant scratching and unsightly flakes due to dry scalp can ruin a hairstyle in a hurry. With cooler weather fast approaching with its lower humidity and dry indoor heat, dry scalp is sure to become a problem for many. That is unless you take steps now to stop it before it starts. Thankfully there are a few simple things you can do to keep dry scalp at bay.
Proper Hair Care
Shampooing too often can certainly dry out your hair and scalp, but so can a buildup of dirt and sweat. You have to find that happy medium between washing too often and not often enough. How often you need to shampoo will vary based on your hair type and lifestyle, but for most people a shampoo twice a week is just about perfect. Be sure and use a moisturizing shampoo and nourishing conditioner to keep your scalp well moisturized. Avoid styling products containing alcohol which is very drying to the scalp and hair.
Drink More Water
Dehydration is a major contributor to dry skin, which is exactly what dry scalp is. By drinking plenty of water you will provide your skin, and scalp, the moisture it needs from the inside out. This is especially important in low humidity conditions that tend to rob moisture from the skin.
Eat Healthy
A healthy diet provides the building blocks for healthy skin and hair. When it comes to scalp health there are a few key nutrients you want to be sure you’re taking in plenty of. Dark leafy greens and carrots provide vitamins A and C that your body needs to make the natural oils that moisturize your hair and scalp. Eggs provide biotin and vitamin B and be sure to take in plenty of food rich in Omega-3 fatty acids including fatty fish, flaxseeds, canola oil, soybeans, pumpkin seeds, and walnuts. All of the nutrients are essential for a healthy scalp.
