We all know that modern style recycles a lot of iconic looks from past decades. And while the grungy lobs of the ‘90s and the Farrah Fawcett curls of the ‘70s have had their comeback moments, it seems like it’s time we cop our latest looks from a livelier era: the ’80s. Hear us out! The 1980s can get a bad rap when it comes to hair, but there are plenty of ways to channel the decade of neon eyeshadow, 8-bit Mario, and acid wash jeans without looking like something out of The Wedding Singer. We’re here today to talk about a few of our favorite modern takes on ’80s hairstyles — no Aqua Net required.
Scrunchies. From red carpet celebs to the high school girl next door, scrunchies seem to be popping up in everyone’s hair (or on their wrists!) these days. Opt for solid colors or fun prints to elevate any hairstyle.
Crimping. Crimped hair was a huge (pun intended) trend in the 80s, and we’re predicting it’s about to make a major comeback. Celebs from Katy Perry to Anna Kendrick have been rocking some seriously hot crimped styles lately, and we’re here for it!
Side ponytail. No, really! Side ponytails are a quick and easy way to add a little something even if you’re short on time. Pull it high for a lazy day in, or glam it up like Beyonce recently did for a night on the town.
Scrunched waves. Put away the blow dryer, because air drying is the new blowout! A nod to the scrunched perm waves of the 80s, this style can even be enjoyed by those of us with straight hair. Simply use a good texturizing spray and a bit of gel, work them from roots to ends, and scrunch baby scrunch! You’ll have festival-ready waves in no time!
