Top 5 Ways to Protect Your Hair From the Summer Sun’s Harmful Rays

Charles IferganEssentials, Product, Styling

Summertime is almost here, and most of us cannot wait to spend long summer days in the sun! We all know that sunlight, excess heat, and UV rays can be damaging to our skin, but did you know that the sun can have a similar effect on your hair? Sun-damaged hair can be frizzy, brittle, dried out, discolored, have split ends, and can even lead to thinner hair. Whether you plan on spending your summer poolside, hiking and adventuring, or just going about your everyday routine, damaged hair can really interfere with your summer plans! Here we take you through the 5 best ways to protect your hair from the sun and heat.

Cover It Up!
This one may seem obvious, but it is so important. Covering your hair is one of the most effective ways to protect it from sun damage. If the sun’s rays can’t reach your hair, they can’t hurt your hair! Many of us put on wide-brimmed sun hats to protect our skin, and the same can be used to protect our hair. It is most important to protect hair at the root, so any sort of hat to cover your scalp will go a long way in preventing sun damage. Covering up your hair doesn’t have to be clunky, and you can dress to fit the occasion! If you’re on the beach, at the pool, or working in your garden, a sun hat might be the perfect solution. For other situations, a baseball cap or light scarf may be more suitable.

Boost Hydration
Sun damage to hair occurs mainly from hair being dried out, so hydration is a must. Not only should you make sure that your hair is properly hydrated externally, but drinking plenty of water is vital to healthy, damage-free hair. Hydrating hair products such as masks and creams can be used to boost hydration in your hair, and certain oils can be used to lock in moisture.

Reduce the Effects of Chlorine
This tip is specifically for those who will be spending a lot of time in the pool this summer. Chlorine from pool water strips your hair of natural oils, and regular exposure can leave hair porous and prone to breakage. Combine that with sun damage, and you’ve got a real mess! When you get out of the pool, be sure to towel dry gently, rinse thoroughly if you are able, and apply hair oil to prevent moisture from leaving your hair.

Sunscreen for Your Hair!
Believe it or not, there are actually sunscreen products specifically made to protect your hair from sun damage!  A regular heat protectant spray or cream can be super effective against damaging heat, but SPF for your hair can go a step beyond that. Hair sunscreens come in many forms, such as sprays or lotions,  just like sunscreen for your skin.

Aftercare is a Must
Aftercare is just as important as prevention. Following time spent in the sun, make sure to rinse your hair and apply a hydrating product to help restore some of the moisture that is lost. Condition your hair often, but be sure not to shampoo your hair too much, as this can also strip your hair of natural oils and moisture. Trim your hair regularly to help combat split ends. Be gentle with your hair while towel drying, and take as much of a break as you can from heat styling. Heat styling plus the summer sun equals double heat on your hair!
