Tips From the Pros to Help Your Color Last Longer

If you love bold, brilliant hair color you probably know how challenging it can be to keep the color rich and vibrant. The common fix for this issue seems to be coloring your hair more often, but this is not the best solution because coloring your hair too frequently is damaging. Here are 5 tips from the pros to keep your hair color fresh and your hair healthy.

Tip #1 – Don’t Shampoo Daily
We’re not suggesting to skimp on hygiene. Cleanliness is important, but daily shampoos aren’t usually necessary. Most people will only need to shampoo their hair a couple of times per week. To freshen between shampoos, give your hair a quick scrub under cool running water in the shower to remove any excess oils or dirt without over-stripping or opening the cuticle to allow your color to rinse down the drain. Or choose a pigmented dry shampoo that matches your hair color to avoid the white cast some products can leave behind.

Tip #2 – Only Use Products Formulated for Color-Treated Hair
Yes, sometimes these products can cost a little more, but they are worth investing in to protect your color. Products specially formulated for color-treated hair help to extend the life of your color and also contain ingredients to nourish strands and repair damage as well as protect from future damage.

Tip #3 – Turn Down the Heat
Regularly heat styling will quickly fade your color. To protect your hair color from heat damage, choose no heat hairstyles whenever possible. If you must use heat, there are special color-safe thermal protectant products that will minimize color loss. By applying a protectant and using the lowest heat setting possible you will reduce the risk of heat-related damage to your hair and your color.

Tip #4 – Avoid UV Damage
It’s important to get enough sunlight to avoid vitamin D deficiencies, but UV rays from the sun damage hair and bleach the color. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat to shade your hair is the easiest and most effective way to save your color, but did you know that there is sunscreen available for your hair? Just be sure that the product you choose is specifically for hair to avoid rocking the greasy hair look.

Tip #5 – Keep Hair Hydrated with Weekly Deep Conditioning
Dry hair looks dull and flat, which is the last thing you want. Color looks more vibrant on smooth shiny hair. A weekly color-safe hydrating hair mask will keep your color-treated locks moisturized to lock in both color and shine.
