Japanese Straightening Aftercare Guide

Japanese Straightening Aftercare instructions:

Japanese Straightening (also called thermal reconditioning) permanently changes the structure of your hair, so aftercare is extremely important, especially in the first few days. Proper care helps keep it smooth, prevents damage, and extends the results.

First 72 Hours (Most Important)

During the first 3 days after treatment:

Avoid:

  • Washing your hair
  • Getting it wet (rain, sweat, humidity)
  • Tucking hair behind ears
  • Hair ties, clips, hats
  • Creases from sleeping awkwardly

Why:
The hair bonds are still stabilizing. Any bends or moisture can create permanent kinks.

Tip:
If a bend happens, immediately straighten it with a flat iron on low heat.

Washing Your Hair

After 72 hours:

  • Use sulfate-free shampoo
  • Use deep conditioner regularly
  • Wash 2–3 times per week instead of daily

Good ingredients to look for:

  • Keratin
  • Argan oil
  • Silk proteins
  • Moisturizing oils

Avoid:

  • Clarifying shampoos
  • Harsh sulfates

Drying & Styling

  • Always blow dry downward for smoothness
  • Use heat protectant before hot tools
  • Limit excessive heat styling

Even though your hair is straight, heat damage can still occur.

Sleeping Care

  • Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase
  • Keep hair straight while sleeping
  • Avoid tight buns or braids

This helps reduce friction and breakage.

Swimming & Exercise

For the first week, avoid:

  • Swimming pools
  • Ocean water
  • Heavy sweating

After that:

  • Wet hair with clean water before swimming
  • Apply conditioner as a barrier
  • Wear a swim cap if possible

Ongoing Maintenance

Japanese straightening lasts 6–12 months, but only on the treated hair.

You’ll eventually see:

  • New curly roots
  • Need for root touch-ups every 4–6 months

Do not overlap straightening on already treated hair — that causes breakage.
